My thoughts about Employee Monitoring

IT life of Radney Carbonel Miranda
Some employers(managers) argue that it is their right to monitor employees for productivity and for security reasons, including monitoring of web surfing and email. While employers use monitoring devices to keep track of their employees' actions and productivity, their employees feel that too much monitoring is an invasion of their privacy. Here on my blog IT life of Radney Carbonel Miranda, I included guidlines to be follow by employers.

These are the 10 point guidelines that I think can require employers to follow in able to ease employee resentment:
  1. Have a company policy sheet stating that the Internet at work is not prohibited unless they finished their work or task that is given to them. Before they start to work on the organization, made them understand those properly.
  2. Block access to non-work related and offensive website by using Internet Filters, but don’t block websites that may be used by employees to access daily news and websites that can provide communications for the employee and their families.
  3. Conduct a seminar for employees about the cyberloafing for them to know what are the causes of abusing the Internet.
  4. Have employees sign a form stating that they will abstain from visiting offensive websites while at work so they will be responsible enough on using Internet properly.
  5. Allow but also limit personal Internet usage to employees in their free time, or after work hours, or in emergencies.
  6.  Value your employees and appreciate their good jobs so that they’ll not likely to involved in such acts like abusing the use of Internet.
  7. Let your employees have access to Internet during their idle time to have relaxation for a small amount of time for them not to be stressed so much at work.
  8. When letting your employees have Internet access, also let them be fully aware and explain to them in a good manner that their unethical behavior will lead to their employment termination because they were there to have their work done first.
  9. Let yourself as a manager to become a person who is easy to approach by your employees when they need to access any Internet applications or websites because there is an emergency.
  10. More importantly, pay your employees well with the salaries that they deserve to have so that they don’t have the feeling that they were not treated well or they don’t earn enough income for their hard work.

As I go on with my journey in the world of IT, I'm starting to love what I do. I can't imagine myself to other fields other than BSIT. I am inspired by many IT professionals like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, etc. I may not be like one of those icon but I'll always do my very best in every things that I'll do. Soon we'll have our OJT and hopefully I'll learn more from there to improve my skills and also I can graduate on time to be able to apply those skills in the real world.
